I remember the very first portable radio I had, an orange Stromberg-Carlson about 1955 vintage. I've been looking on and off for one on eBay and found one like it recently. There were two different versions, the one I had only used batteries, the one I got from eBay could also be plugged in.
My first experiments with it yesterday yielded no sound of any kind, so today I brought it down the the bench to do some quick checks on it. I was surprised when I checked it tonight; while there's some nasty hum, I could hear stations on it. I'd never trust running something like this unattended while plugged in, but it might be interesting putting some batteries in it.
I'm turning in for the night then in the next few days I'll get some pictures and more details posted.
